font_container=&#8221;tag:h6|text_align:left&#8221; use_theme_fonts=&#8221;yes&#8221;][vc_column_text]There will always be children and young people in schools facing life challenges that detract from their ability to engage with learning.\u00a0 Some will require greater support to increase their emotional literacy than others.\u00a0 ELSA is an initiative developed and supported by educational psychologists.\u00a0 It recognises that children learn better and are happier in school if their emotional needs are also addressed.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We are fortunate to have a qualified Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) at St Bartholomew&#8217;s Primary School. \u00a0 Miss Quartley has been trained by Educational Psychologists to plan and deliver programmes of support to pupils who are experiencing temporary or longer term additional emotional needs.\u00a0 The majority of ELSA work is delivered on an individual basis, but sometimes small group work is more appropriate, especially in the areas of social and friendship skills.\u00a0 Sessions are fun using a range of activities such as: games, role-play with puppets or arts and craft.\u00a0 ELSA sessions take place in &#8216;The Rainbow Room, which provides a calm, safe space for the child to feel supported and nurtured.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;In ELSA we aim to provide support for a wide range of emotional needs:&#8221; font_container=&#8221;tag:h6|text_align:left&#8221; use_theme_fonts=&#8221;yes&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Recognising emotions<\/li>\n<li>Self-esteem<\/li>\n<li>Social skills<\/li>\n<li>Friendship skills<\/li>\n<li>Anger management<\/li>\n<li>Loss and bereavement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;How does ELSA work?&#8221; font_container=&#8221;tag:h6|text_align:left&#8221; use_theme_fonts=&#8221;yes&#8221;][vc_column_text]Children are usually referred for ELSA support by their Class Teacher, Senior Leaders or the SENDCo.\u00a0 Every term,\u00a0referrals are reviewed\u00a0to identify and prioritise which children require a weekly programme for the next 6-8 weeks.\u00a0 With the programme\u00a0aims in mind we then plan support sessions to facilitate the pupil in developing new skills and coping strategies that allow them to manage social and emotional demands more effectively.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;Supporting &#8211; not fixing&#8221; font_container=&#8221;tag:h6|text_align:left&#8221; use_theme_fonts=&#8221;yes&#8221;][vc_column_text]Remember, ELSAs are not there to fix children&#8217;s problems.\u00a0 What we can do is provide emotional support.<\/p>\n<p>We aim to establish a warm, respectful relationship with a pupil and to provide a reflective space\u00a0where they are able\u00a0to share honestly their thoughts and feelings.<\/p>\n<p>It needs to be appreciated that change cannot necessarily be achieved rapidly and is dependent upon the context and complexity of the presenting issues.\u00a0 For children with complex or long-term needs it is unrealistic to expect ELSA intervention to resolve all their difficulties, however support will be designed to target specific aspects of a child&#8217;s need.\u00a0 Training and development of ELSAs is an ongoing process and wisdom is required to recognise when issues are beyond the level of expertise that could reasonably be expected of an ELSA.\u00a0 The Educational Psychologist that works with our school would be able to offer advice on suitability or nature of ELSA involvement in complex cases.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;Do you have an anxious child?&#8221;
